I wasn't expecting much out of this book. Many people had told me that it was not good. Still, I had to give it a try.Of course, it's very sexist, racist and homophobic. I could have overlooked that, discounting it to "different times". But I didn't expect it to be this much. He actually says that having sex with the girl would be more pleasurable because it would always have "the sweet tang of rape". SWEET TANG OF RAPE??? FUCK YOU!!!
On top of that, it's just a bad story, really, and badly written. It's got very little to do with the movie (of course, I was expecting that). The first half of the book tells the story of how he beat Le Chiffre at cards, and it was so boring I had to struggle not to fall asleep while reading it. Maybe I would have enjoyed that if I were interested in gambling, but I doubt it. After all, I have no trouble reading well-written books on things I wouldn't be interested in normally. The suspense was just not built properly, or forced, and the whole thing was a bunch of cliches string together. The second part is just the love story between Bond and Vesper, and it's so bad.
I'll still read the next one, because I have a policy of always giving authors and series a second chance. But, even if the series improves A LOT, it will still not be good. I doubt I'll be reading more than that.
